As I’m sure you know, trips begin long before pulling out of the driveway. The process of preparing for as many unknown situations as possible may be my favorite part. This becomes particularly enjoyable when it involves new equipment, a new mode of transportation, and uncertainty about how individual components will pack and function together. Lately, I find myself preparing meals on a camp table on my front porch using the equipment I can fit in the boxes I’ll be taking with me. It’s a great way to begin since there’s no danger of forgetting anything but I can almost convince myself I’m camping. I can’t think of a single trial that didn’t lead to a slight change in equipment, weather that be cutting the handle off of a pan, using a siphon tube to pull water for washing dishes, or changing the set of aluminum boxes I intend to bring in order to fit something new; the more you plan for before day zero, the more enjoyable the trip becomes.
